Description
It is generally accepted in both the martial arts community as well as baseball, that certain people have the ability to manipulate their perception of time. Several studies have shown that there simply isn’t enough time between the pitch and the swing for the batter to determine where the ball will go and then swing the bat.
That means the perception of time can be manipulated. But when you look at your own experience of dreaming, you already know time in the ‘dream-state’ is not fixed. And I think each of us has had the experience of some outside noise fitting into our dream seamlessly.
Consciousness and time are intimately connected, which leads us to wonder if we can consciously manipulate our perception of time.
The short answer is yes. People do that all the time when they meditate. They quiet their mind, the stray thoughts go away and they sit in silence.
Physicists tell us that our reality is digital. It doesn’t actually move, but is simply a projection of consciousness. But since this ‘reality movie’ moves so quickly we see it as moving smoothly.
But in reality, the changes we see in our constantly moving reality are not only produced and controlled by consciousness, but is constrained by it as well. We only see the changes that our consciousness allows.
That led me to start thinking about those people that are easily overwhelmed or perhaps diagnosed with ADHD. Perhaps the issue lies with the ability to control their perception of time. And since all changes happen in ‘now’. Maybe their now simply isn’t long enough. Or if you prefer a computer analogy, they simply don’t have enough CPU time to process the incoming information.
One lady remarked when I handed it to her “the voices just stopped”. This may have been a coincidence, but I do know, she wouldn’t give it back and did take it home with her….
Maybe we all could use more CPU time, maybe we all need a longer now, every once in a while.
